Shannon Fentiman speaks after the ABC highlighted the case of a woman who took her own life just days after being released from a Queensland public hospital.

Queensland Health Minister Shannon Fentiman admits the government is still "playing catch-up" when it comes to the provision of public mental health services in the wake of a tragic suicide.

In a brief statement, Opposition health spokeswoman Ros Bates said "more must be done to protect Queenslanders from the growing mental health crisis and that includes better services and facilities". She said an LNP government would reinvest the mental health levy back into frontline mental health services, with a focus on youth mental health.

Professor Emmerson suggested an increase in the mental health levy, collected as a payroll tax on big business, as a way of finding the money. The levy has already resulted in the delivery of more than 600 additional frontline workers and 45 new mental health beds. At the same time as planning for more beds, Dr Allan conceded mental health units in metropolitan Brisbane, built last century, needed to be rebuilt or refurbished, but could give no timeframe."It's all about what we can fund."In May, an external review was launched into The Prince Charles Hospital's mental health unit, in Brisbane's north, after three people took their own lives and two others attempted suicide there between December 2022 and April 2024.

"I think people who show up for mental health treatment are very brave to recognise and take some action. We should be treating them as heroes."Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union secretary Sarah Beaman has joined the call for more community mental health workers, citing increased demand.
