Nearly three years after a fatal plane crash near Mackay, the Department of Public Prosecutions has decided not to formally charge the aircraft's pilot with manslaughter.
A North Queensland pilot who was charged over a fatal light plane crash has had his manslaughter case dropped but is still facing other aviation-related charges.
Peter Thomas McDougall, 67, was allegedly flying unlicensed when the plane crashed onto a beach at Ball Bay, 35 kilometres north of Mackay, on Christmas Eve in 2021.He was the only passenger on the private leisure flight.Mr McDougall was arrested at a Halliday Bay home in February last year after Mackay detectives and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority executed a search warrant.
In May this year, Mr McDougall’s case was committed to the Supreme Court in Mackay and the Department of Public Prosecutions was given six months to formally charge him with manslaughter. In a statement, the DPP said it had “notified the registry that it sought to discontinue the matter” on November 1.
Mr McDougall still faces six charges, including flying unlicensed, unlawfully carrying out maintenance and flying without satisfying safety requirements.Photo shows Man in dark suit standing in front of supermarket fridge.
