The Queensland government has confirmed Suncorp Stadium will be the showpiece stadium of the 2032 Olympics after rejecting a proposal to build a new venue at a higher cost.

The Queensland Premier has knocked back a proposal to build a new stadium in Brisbane’s Victoria Park in favour of a cheaper alternative for the 2032 Olympics.

“When Queenslanders are struggling with housing and other costs, I cannot justify to them spending $3.4 billion on a new stadium. I ordered this review because I had heard from Queenslanders that $2.7 billion at the Gabba was too much. So I know that for Queenslanders, $3.4 billion at Victoria Park will be too much, so I’m ruling that out.

This option allows the government to upgrade Suncorp Stadium – the home of the Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Maroons in the NRL, and Brisbane Roar in the A-League. “I am biased, but I have always thought it was the best rectangular field in the world and with this, we can make it even better,” he said.
