The PM was jeered by the audience in York after saying he would leave the 'foreign court' if it blocked his Rwanda policy

Rishi Sunak has been careful since becoming Prime Minister not to be too aggressive towards his ill-fated predecessor, Liz Truss. In pursuit of Conservative party unity, Mr Sunak would say only that Ms Truss 'made mistakes' and gently point out that he ran against her economic plans in the summer of 2022. Tonight that changed. The PM tried out a new line in his criticism of Labour's tax plans, warning: 'What Keir Starmer is promising you is the same fantasy that Liz Truss did.

Many observers have been surprised at his reluctance to distance himself from her more - and from the errors Boris Johnson made which led to his own downfall. Of course, it seems far too late now for the Prime Minister to make up the ground his party has lost. Just look at the way he took a battering over the state of the NHS and the unfulfilled promises of Brexit - the two main Tory pledges at the last election.
