In March, Suffolk-based pub operator and brewer Greene King announced one of the most significant restructuring programmes in The company unveiled plans to convert or dispose of around 300 managed pubs across its UK estate, including sites in Merseyside. Approximately 150 pubs are set to move into the company’s Pub Partners division, which includes leased, tenanted and franchise models, while a further 150 sites have been identified for potential sale over the medium term.

In addition, a small number of further closures are expected to take place as part of the company’s routine annual review process. At the time, CEO Nick Mackenzie said the strategy would "set us up to deliver sustainable profitable growth for the long-term as consumer habits continue to evolve and the operating environment remains dynamic”.

Following this announcement, there was online speculation regarding the future of Bromborough’s The Royal Oak - the last remaining Wacky Warehouse in Merseyside, following the closure of another in. Greene King acquired Wacky Warehouse in 2015 through its £774 million takeover of Spirit Pub Company, adding the brand to its portfolio alongside others such as Chef & Brewer and Flaming Grill.

The Royal Oak in Bromborough has a history that stretches back far beyond the current building familiar to local residents. An earlier Royal Oak Hotel stood on Bromborough Village Road and is believed to have done so for centuries.

The original Royal Oak Hotel closed in 1958 and was replaced by a newer Royal Oak building across the road on High Street. This marked a shift from the traditional village inn model toward a larger and more modern public house designed for changing post-war tastes.
