Sky's Ian King says Ray Kelvin's business achievements should be noted as a cloud hangs over his departure from Ted Baker.
Ray Kelvin's departure from Ted Baker brings down the curtain on one of the most remarkable careers in British fashion retailing during the last three decades.
He told The Times in 2007:"I really wanted to develop my own brand. My personal passion has always been shirts. I failed maths 'O' level but, when they put a pound sign in front of the numbers, it all became clear. I can understand design and I can run a business." In those early days, Trudie would also work in the shops, wearing a badge that read 'Ted's Mum'. This reflected that Ted, a fictitious character, was seen very much as an extension of Mr Kelvin himself.
That year, the company floated on the stock market with a valuation of £56m, paving the way for more than two decades of breakneck expansion that took the company into numerous overseas markets and saw it extend the brand into fashion accessories, fragrances, licensing and wholesaling. Profiles of the founder would also regularly mention that he greeted visitors - even those he had not met previously - with a hug.
Mr Kelvin, who has denied all allegations of misconduct, stepped down from day-to-day running of the business in December and Herbert Smith Freehills, a City law firm, was brought in by the board to investigate the allegations.
