New research has found that patients with stable coronary artery disease who quit smoking drastically reduced their risk of a major cardiac event
New research is sounding the alarm that quitting smoking almost halves the risk of a heart attack, whereas merely cutting down has little benefit. Investigators discovered that patients with stable coronary artery disease who gave up smoking any time post-diagnosis slashed their chances of suffering a major cardiac event, like a heart attack, by nearly 50%.
Initially, 41.3% had never smoked, 46.2% were ex-smokers, and 12.5% were current smokers. Among ex-smokers identified at the time of their coronary artery disease diagnosis, a substantial 72.8% halted smoking within the subsequent year, while only 27.2% quit in later years. The study revealed that each additional year of smoking post-diagnosis increased the risk of MACE by 8%. Even though quitting smoking led to a "rapid significant reduction" in MACE risk for former smokers, they still couldn't match the cardiovascular risk levels of lifelong non-smokers.
