With few details out right now, not much is known about the film except its genre and talented cast. Eddington is being marketed as a “film noir ensemble western dark comedy” about a “small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.
Yeah, I’m a huge fan of Ari and Joaquin and Emily and Darius Khondji and everybody involved. The entire team was incredible to work with. I don’t want to give much away as far as the story and character go, but it was a wild adventure that I got to go on. I got to play a character who’s very different from anything that I’ve done. Ari and I have been friends for a little bit, and it was great to see him on set.
Aster got his start in horror, with his debut film Hereditary earning rave reviews and a modest box office gross. It currently has a 90% score from critics on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes and globally grossed $87 million off a $10 million budget. Aster continued this craving for horror with 2019’s Midsommar, which also saw success in its reception and box office gross.
While the details for Eddington are sparse, Aster seems to be continuing his inclination towards dark comedy rather than straight-up horror. While this may disappoint some viewers, Butler is right: Aster does have a twisted sense of humor. It’s so twisted, in fact, that some might find what the director finds funny as terrifying, as there were some moments in Beau is Afraid that elicited horror while making the audience laugh. It was silly, preposterous, and undoubtedly dark.
