The Boys is famous for its gruesome depictions of ultra violence, and more often than not, Butcher is the one who brings that violence to the page. But this time, Butcher secretly murdered a key character “off camera”, and one of the main artists behind the series confirms it.
As The Boys comic series started coming to an end, Butcher was increasingly unhinged, and Hughie Campbell could sense it. So, Hughie reached out to Mallory after learning that he was the man behind the Boys. During a meeting between the two of them, Mallory told Hughie everything he knew about the Boys and about Billy Butcher himself. In fact, Mallory was integral to Hughie ultimately preventing Butcher’s genocidal attack against every supe in the world.
The fact that Hughie really is the last of the Boys only adds to the weight of The Boys finale. In the end, Hughie takes over the task force and does his best to work with Stillwell and Vought to ensure the safety of civilians and supes alike through non-violent and above-board means. Hughie represents a new chapter for those who would stand up against superhumans that use their powers wrongly.
