Oak House near Hucknall will serve as the new headquarters of Nottinghamshire County Council
Developers building a new headquarters for Nottinghamshire County Council are in a "race against the weather" to get the £18 million project finished in time. Heavy flooding at the start of the year left builders with "the worst of both worlds" and the project fell behind.
With another winter before the scheduled completion though, developers have now brought forward a lot of work on the outside of the building that was originally due to be done later this year. Liam Moylan, the project manager, said he and his team were trying to "break the back" of the outside work whilst the weather was favourable.Mr Moylan said: "It's a bit of a race against the weather and we haven't really had the weather to win the race at this point.
The build will mean Nottinghamshire County Council largely vacating its historic County Hall building in West Bridgford - which it has occupied since 1946. Asked if he would miss working at the historic County Hall with its River Trent views, Councillor Keith Girling replied: "No, I won't." "Nostalgia has got its place, and we are bringing in some of that nostalgia here, but to be fair, that doesn't help the person on the street." It reportedly costs £1.7 million a year to operate and maintain County Hall and the cost of essential maintenance over the next 12 years is predicted to be more than £30 million.
