Rachel Goldberg -Polin, the mother of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who has been held hostage by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, poses for a photo next to a poster of her son during an interview in Jerusalem on May 29, 2024. The number 236 that Rachel Goldberg -Polin taped above her heart marked the number of days her son Hersh had been held hostage in Gaza when she met AFP at her Jerusalem office.

Following the weekend’s military raid, some 120 hostages remain in Gaza. Among them is Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a 23-year-old Israeli-American citizen who was captured at the Re’im music festival on October 7. His mother, Rachel Goldberg-Polin, has become a tireless advocate for the release of all hostages, and on Tuesday she spoke toabout her reaction to the hostage rescue, the U.N.

Wearing the number 249 taped to her t-shirt—to mark the number of days Hersh has been held hostage—Goldberg told ForbesWomen editor Maggie McGrath that “the way to get all of these hostages released... is when these things are diplomatically negotiated. That is truly the way forward.” When asked what she wants the general public to understand about her experience since her son was taken, Goldberg replied: “You can hold two truths. This doesn’t have to be as divisive as I often hear it being. You can be heartbroken and extremely concerned about innocent civilians who are caught in Gaza, and you can be heartbroken and severely concerned about civilians in Gaza who were dragged there on October 7. You can hold both of those.
