The trainer and two of his former employees are facing a number of animal cruelty-related charges following a Racing Victoria investigation being 'reactivated' by evidence heard in court last year.

Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir is facing fresh allegations of animal cruelty from Racing Victoria.The charges relate to matters Darren Weir and former employees Jarrod McLean and Tyson Kermond were sentenced for in court in DecemberWeir received a four-year ban from horseracing in 2019 that expired in February this year

The charges stem from an investigation that was "reactivated after further evidence was presented in the Magistrates Court on December 14, 2022", Racing Victoria said. The charges against Weir include four counts of corruption, dishonesty and misleading behaviour, and six counts related to the care and welfare of horses.

The charges against McLean and Kermond relate to them allegedly being party to or involved in Weir's alleged use of a jigger at that time.In the Warrnambool Magistrates Court last December, Weir, McLean and Kermond pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges related to use of a jigger, which is a small, taser-like device.
