Local campaigners and politicians want the Government to scrap plans to house migrants at ex-RAF bases Wethersfield and Scampton
In 2023, the Government revealed plans to house up to 2,000 asylum seekers at the RAF Scampton site in Lincolnshire
Decisions on other ex-RAF sites at Wethersfield in Essex and Scampton in Lincolnshire are due to be made by the Home Secretary in due course,However, no timescale has been given as to when confirmation will be provided on plans for housing asylum seekers at the bases, which local campaigners and politicians want scrapped.
Around 500 men are on the Wethersfield site in ex-home secretary James Cleverly’s constituency, while nobody has yet been moved into Scampton, once home to the Red Arrows and the Dambusters. It comes as the High Court heard asylum seekers housed at the “prison-like” former RAF Wethersfield base had to queue for food and experienced scabies outbreaks.
Building work was still taking place at the site, he said, with portacabins in place for up to 800 asylum seekers.“Now today, they’ve closed this , how complicated is it? I know it’s cost a scandalous waste of money,” Mr Patterson said.A spokeswoman for West Lindsey District Council said: “It’s clear the Home Secretary is taking decisive action to implement a new approach to reducing the asylum backlog and providing suitable accommodation.
Meanwhile, four former residents of RAF Wethersfield in Essex are taking legal action against the Home Office, claiming it acted unlawfully by housing them at the site when it was “not suitable” accommodation for people who had been victims of torture and human trafficking or were disabled.
