The Spaniard's quest for a record-extending 15th title at Roland Garros is starting to gather momentum
May 1, 2024 10:24 am“This is a joke, next year I’m coming back,” he ribbed the 13,000-strong crowd during an elongated “gracias Rafa” ceremony on the capital’s biggest tennis court. This could be Nadal’s last match ever in Spain and everyone was milking it for all it was worth.
“We’re very lucky to have him and it’s an amazing career,” fellow Spaniard and 1994 Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez tellsShe adds: “He’s healthy and he feels well, and I think the progression is good. The most important part is that he doesn’t get injured again, or he doesn’t make 10 steps forward and then goes backwards.
“My life and my body have been sending me signals for some time that this day had to come at the right time, I’ve been able to do it playing on a court that was a dream for me and on top of that doing it in one of the places I’ve been most excited about playing,” Nadal said.
