Raheem Sterling ‘doesn’t understand’ criticism aimed at Gareth Southgate and issues warning to England players ahead of World Cup ThreeLions
Raheem Sterling has told talkSPORT he ‘doesn’t understand’ the criticism of England manager Gareth Southgate ahead of this winter’s World Cup.and insisted poor individual performances are to blame for their recent slump – and the Three Lions stars are keen to ‘put that right’ against Germany.England have been stale and looked devoid of attacking flair as they head into the World Cup
“We’ve been disappointed, but the most important thing we need to get into our heads is it’s gone now, we can’t dwell on the past, we can only focus on the present and that’s Germany – that’s where we need to show who we are and what we can do. “We want to show the fans what they alright know, and that’s why the majority of people have been disappointed with our recent results, because they know what we can do. We raised the expectations on ourselves and now we need to take accountability and put on a good show at Wembley and get a good result.”When asked about Southgate, Sterling was strong in his defence of the coach and insisted the ‘leader’ still has the support of his players.
“We made it to a semi-final [World Cup 2018] and a final [Euro 2020] and looking at it right now probably a lot of people aren’t looking at us as a team that can win it, but we’re confident as a group that we can have a good campaign. “It’s disappointing, but I keep saying, Gareth as our leader, we all look to him and it’s now time for us to take that responsibility and win football matches – that’s all we can do to change the narrative.”
