Raheem Sterling flies home from Qatar World Cup after armed robbers break into his family home
Raheem Sterling missed England's World Cup victory over Senegal after his family home has been targeted by armed robbers.
Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed that the 27-year-old is travelling home to the UK to be with his family just prior to the match, which England won 3-0 to seal a place in the quarter finals. It has been reported that the property in Surrey was targeted on Saturday night, and the Chelsea winger was alerted in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to The Telegraph, Sterling's partner and young child were at home during the raid.Southgate is hoping former City player Sterling will be available for the quarter-final against France on Saturday, although the England manager is unsure whether the winger will be back in Qatar in time.
Southgate said of Sterling after England's win over Senegal: "The priority for him is to be with his family. "We're going to support that and leave him to have as much time as he needs. He's going home. I don't want to put him under pressure. Sometimes football isn't the most important thing, family should come first." Read more of today's top stories here
