Hundreds of supporters for the expansion of Medicaid showed up at the Statehouse Tuesday to advocate for the move.MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Hundreds who support expanding Medicaid in Alabama gathered at the Statehouse Tuesday to advocate for the move.

“It would help rural hospitals stay open to serve everyone in their communities, and the most important thing it will do, it will save lives,” said Alabama Arise President Clyde Jones. “Pre-conception care, also known as care before pregnancy, plays a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of maternal and infant health. However, thousands of Alabama women are either uninsured or cannot access the care they need and deserve,” said March of Dimes maternal and infant director Honour Hill.

“Our hospitals are at risk. It’s something to the order of 80% of our rural hospital now have operating losses, and so they are in critical shape,” said Alabama Rural Health Association President Farrell Turner. “Thankfully we’ve been, I think, fortunate that we’ve not lost any of our hospitals really since COVID, but unfortunately Pickens County closed about a month before COVID hit.”
