Thousands of Rangers fans descended upon Manchester for their Europa League clash against Manchester United, despite a red weather warning. Police escorted the boisterous traveling support through the city streets, where singing and the release of pyrotechnics created a smoky atmosphere. The club had urged fans to behave, especially given the dark history of fan violence in Manchester during a previous Rangers match in 2008.
A line of police officers marched ahead of Rangers fans as they made their way to Old Trafford. The Gers take on Man United at 8pm tonight, Thursday, January 24, ahead of their Europa League fixture in Manchester. The club were given 3,500 tickets for the match but thousands more Scots made the trip down south to take part in the occasion despite a red weather warning being issued.
Footage shows police officers escorting Rangers fans through the streets of the city as they sang and let off pyrotechnics. Smoke filled the air, as a crowd of ultras dressed in black, led the procession through the streets. Rangers released a statement earlier this week urging the travelling legions to be on their best behaviour. Back in 2008 over 100,000 Rangers fans travelled to Manchester for the Uefa Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg. However ugly scenes marred the fixtures, with police battling throughout the night to restore order after trouble erupted in the Picadilly Gardens area. Greater Manchester Police warned that they expect the city centre to be exceptionally busy before kick off. In a post on X, GMP said: 'Plan ahead if traveling between 5pm and 7:30pm today! Manchester United vs. Glasgow Rangers at Old Trafford means the city centre and surrounding areas will be exceptionally busy. Expect heavy traffic and busy tram lines (Altrincham, Eccles, Trafford Park).'
