That’s Smith’s mantra, at least, and it’s the course of action he’ll take Saturday when he starts at third base and bats third in the series second game at Globe Life Field.Smith has been hit by a league-high 16 pitches this season — two more than second-place Willi Castro of the Minnesota Twins — and has been plunked 32 times since he debuted with the Rangers in 2022.
It’s not exactly a new phenomenon either. The 26-year-old was hit by a pitch 26 times in the minor leagues and 32 times in three college seasons at LSU. Smith, at 5-foot-10, is shorter than each of the other 11 players in baseballs who’ve been hit by double-digit pitches this season. He doesn’t crowd the batter’s box intentionally. He isn’t in a hurry to dodge incoming objects either.It’s helped contribute to a .390 on-base percentage, which leads the Rangers and ranks ninth in all of baseball.
