Rangers survived a nervy afternoon in Petershill to beat Glasgow City and sustain their title ambitions.
Jo Potter’s side remain level on points with Celtic at the top of the SWPL with just two games to play. Elena Sadiku’s Hoops are within touching distance of their first title given they have a better goal difference of 15. Celtic beat Partick Thistle 3-0 with goals from Amy Gallacher, Murphy Agnew and Shen Mengyu. And happy coach Sadiku said: “We dominated and we pressed really well. It was a good team performance. The most important thing is we kept pushing.
Glasgow City will feel they merited a point from a spirited display against Rangers. The champions are now condemned to a third-place finish this season. Rachel McLauchlan netted the only goal of the game and Gers boss Potter said: “It felt like a huge result. City make it hard for you, especially on their own ground.
“It felt like a huge three points but when you’re in a title race like this one then every win and every game is massive. We can’t afford to look at the goal difference and get distracted by that. If we think too much about it then we risk dropping points. All we can do is have a very firm focus on ourselves.
City manager Leanne Ross was pleased with the performance but frustrated at the goal conceded. A Kirsty Howat backheel from a throw-in picked out the Scotland international who curled an effort into the top corner. Ross said: “We switched off. We should never be losing a goal in those circumstances.”
