But, as Carter continued to ramp up, his back worsened. He had to pause one swing regiment halfway through — just three days after he’d expressed that optimism regarding his return — because the pain was so bad. He was evaluated by California-based orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins last weekend, and a shutdown was determined as the best plan of action soon after.
