The Athletic's Scott Wheeler and Harman Dayal list the top Calder Trophy candidates from the NHL's talented incoming rookie class.
Faber’s going to be a fascinating case study this season because we know that offense wins awards, but if there’s a defense-first guy who is ever going to get into the conversation, he feels like the perfect candidate both as a player because of how well he defends and how efficient he is and situationally as someone who may play serious minutes on a playoff team. If he’s playing the 14-and-half minutes he played in the playoffs for the Wild, it probably won’t matter how efficient he is.
Wright has a bright long-term future, but nothing about last year screams, “This guy is going to immediately light up the NHL.” It’s going to be challenging to earn big minutes given how flush Seattle is with quality forwards. The best place for him to play this season would probably be the AHL. The problem is that he played only 24 CHL games last season, which would leave him short of the 25-game threshold for 2022-23 to officially count as a junior season for the purposes of the NHL-CHL agreement. Without that, Wright technically can’t spend a full year in the AHL. In that case, it’d have to be a decision between the NHL or OHL, in which case Seattle may prefer keeping him up.
