The UK government has imposed an export ban on a rare Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet panel discovered in East Yorkshire in 2013. The panel, valued at almost £4,000, is being considered for national treasure status due to its significance in understanding Anglo-Saxon art and history. The ban temporarily prevents the object from leaving the country, giving UK institutions and galleries an opportunity to acquire it.

The government has imposed an export bar on a rare Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet panel found in East Yorkshire.

The bar temporarily means the object cannot leave the country and provides an opportunity for a UK gallery or institution to buy it. The trapezoidal-shaped panel has interlocking cells made from strips of gold soldered to a sheet gold backplate and filled with hand-cut garnets. Committee member Tim Pestell said: "I hope that the bar placed on its export allows a museum to acquire this wonderful artefact as it has much yet to tell us about this pivotal period in English history."

While BHP remains interested in Anglo's copper assets, a renewed bid is considered unlikely until Anglo completes its restructuring, including the spin-out of its platinum business.
