A coin expert has revealed that some rare Christmas-themed 50p coins from Gibraltar could be worth a considerable sum of money. He encourages viewers to check their change for these festive treasures.
A coin expert has highlighted some rare Christmas-themed 50p coins from Gibraltar that could be worth a small fortune. In a TikTok video, the enthusiast, who goes by Coin Collector UK, advised his followers to keep an eye out for these festive treasures in their change. Despite Gibraltar being a British Overseas Territory with its own currency, its coins are sometimes found in circulation within the UK due to their identical weight, size, and metal composition to British coins.
The Coin Collector UK said: 'These Christmas 50p from Gibraltar are worth a fortune so keep any that you do come across in your change. I've already done a video on the Isle of Man Christmas 50ps, which sell for some very good money and the same also goes for the Gibraltar ones.' He then detailed specific coins to watch for, including a year 2000 coin depicting Mary and baby Jesus, which can command between £90 and £110 if circulated, and up to £130 if uncirculated. He added: 'You see here some of the notable ones - the Madonna and child from 2000. This one goes for about £90 to £110 in circulated condition.' Additionally, he highlighted a 1998 coin featuring Santa Claus in a chimney, noting that it could bring in as much as £110 for a circulated version or £130 if it hasn't been used. A coveted 2002 coin depicting two shepherds and their sheep could net owners between £150 to £160 if circulated, or up to £180 uncirculated, he continued. The expert also highlighted some older 50p coins which have now become collector's items. 'As I said in the other video, it's unlikely that you will see this in your change as these are the older large 50ps, which were removed from circulation,' he pointed out.
