Brian Hannan of Abbey Books discovered the famous William Wallace poem ‘The Death of Wallace’ in a box that was donated to the shop.
The copy of the famous William Wallace poem ‘The Death of Wallace’ which was written by radical Paisley poet Hugh Kilpatrick has been found in Abbey Books more than 100 years after it was published – and in close to mint condition.
The Death of Wallace and Other Poems was published posthumously after he died in 1909 at the age of 86. Brian Hannan, manager of Abbey Books, discovered the book when he opened a box of books donated to the store. “Somebody could have been clearing out a house, put it in a box and donated it to us. I have so many boxes sitting here unopened and you never know what you could find, so much heart jumped a little when I saw the beautiful cover when I lifted it out.”He penned poems about the inaugurations of the Tannahill monument in 1883, the Burns Statue in Fountain Gardens in 1896 and the opening of the George A Clark Town Hall in 1882.
