Wild-haired star Yahoo Serious, who was huge in the '80s and '90s with movies like Young Einstein, has been spotted out – but he's so different compared to his Hollywood heyday

Fans of iconic 1980s cinema will surely remember a wild-haired star who featured in one of the most successful Australian films of that era. However, the lead actor has been largely off the grid since his peak fame in the late '80s and throughout the 1990s.

Recently, there was a rare sighting of the actor out and about in Sydney this month.Pictures have surfaced of the star taking a leisurely walk near the ocean, clad only in blue shorts, sunglasses and an ankle bracelet. His once voluminous red hair was slicked back and devoid of its natural colour - but despite being in his 70s, the actor looked fit as he soaked up the sun. While the actor appeared relaxed after his morning swim, those around him might not have recognised him as a former screen superstar. He was once tipped to be a massive Hollywood comedy star, potentially rivalling the likes of Jim Carrey or the late Robin Williams, before he faded into obscurity. The man in question is none other than Yahoo Serious - the star of the hit 1988 film Young Einstein, which was a creative take on the life of renowned theoretical physicist Albert Einstein. The 70 year old actor was born Greg Gomez Pead before he legally changed his name in 1980 ahead of his breakout role in 1988, reports the Mirror. Young Einstein was a massive success in the late '80s, raking in nearly five times its budget at the box office and becoming the third biggest Australian film in history at the time, only surpassed by Crocodile Dundee and Crocodile Dundee II. Yahoo then starred in the 1993 film Reckless Kelly, which offered a satirical take on the life of infamous Aussie criminal Ned Kelly. However, this follow-up film didn't fare as well commercially, with many comparing it unfavourably to Young Einstein. His third and final film, Mr Accident, released in 2000, was both a critical and commercial disappointment. After this setback, Yahoo largely retreated from the public eye, although he did appear in a film documentary about Cannes in 2007. Away from his acting career, Yahoo's personal life has also made headlines. In 2000, he tried to sue the internet search engine Yahoo! for trademark infringement, as the company emerged over a decade after he had legally changed his own name to Yahoo. However, the case was dismissed in court as the actor couldn't prove he sold products or services under the name. He also faced some challenges during the pandemic when he was reportedly evicted from his Sydney rental property. He was ordered to pay $15,000 USD , but the actor claimed he was unable to make the payment due to the impact Covid-19 had on his earnings.
