Kieran Sampler has killed about 50,000 rats during his lifetime
A Yorkshire rat catcher who caught a rat the size of a small dogs has warned they're 'getting bigger and bolder'.
Kieran runs Vermicure in Robinhood and set up Facebook page Yorkshire Rat Pack which is collective of pest controllers across the county, who share jobs and help each other out. It includes about five more rat-catchers, who Kieran says over the years have become like a “brotherhood,” comparing their bond and sense of camaraderie to the friendships he developed in the army. The group deals with rat problems in domestic and commercial settings, mainly in agricultural land.
A day in the life of a rat catcher Kieran’s day begins bright and early at 6am. The first thing he does his take his dogs, Lakeland terriers Poppy and Penny, a mother and daughter, who are six and two, for a walk. They are his very special helpers throughout the day. After he’s returned home and had a bite to eat, Kieran then goes through his potential jobs that day and plans accordingly. Kieran will take on jobs in his patch and figure out where he must revisit. Lots of traps require him to check back every 12 or 24 hours to make sure any rodent caught in the trap isn’t suffering.
He avoids using traps which risk causing suffering or traps them in a cage or glues them to a wooden board, as he says this really traumatises the rodents. He would only uses these as a “last resort”. He also avoids poisons as this could risk harming other animals.
