The Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station has stopped generating power for the first time since 1967
Nottinghamshire 's Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station is hosting a special event to mark its closure today after coal power in the UK officially ended at midnight. The country'sthe iconic cooling towers are set to remain in place for years as the decommissioning of the power station now gets underway.
Around 350 staff from Uniper, which most recently ran the site, finished their last shifts on Monday and the power station played host to several dignitaries on Tuesday as its official closure was marked. Describing the Ratcliffe on Soar power station as a “cathedral of the 20th century”, Uniper CEO Michael Lewis said: “For me, Ratcliffe has always been a crown jewel since it started generating in 1967. It’s a pillar of energy security in the UK, built in an era when coal was the symbol of industrial progress.
The country's last remaining coal-fired power station officially ended operations on Monday as the UK moves to cleaner forms of energy.A ceremony marking the closure is about to get underway. Guests include East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward, Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire Veronica Pickering and Rushcliffe's Labour MP James Naish.Around 40 staff will be leaving the site at the end of October, some retiring and some embarking on new careers.
