Problems were particularly acute during race days at the nearby Cartmel racecourse when effluent would be discharged downstream. Water companies including United Utilities have paid millions of pounds in fines for polluting waterways : “I’m gobsmacked, have taken us for mugs. They said they’ve been doing all this work but it’s got worse.
When sewers are overwhelmed, such as during periods of heavy rain, they discharge the excess into rivers to prevent the network from backing up. “In addition, we have been working with the owners of Cartmel Racecourse to put in place a care plan whereby tankers are brought in to remove the additional commercial flows we see around race days.
A spokesperson said the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs would not be commenting on individual cases following the publication of sewage spill statistics.
