'It’s not London they're not bothered': Readers react to minister's Northern Powerhouse Rail comments
Last week saw an angry reaction to comments made by new business secretary Grant Schapps, who claimed there was 'not much point' in completing Northern Powerhouse Rail to its fully proposed extent.
Plans to build a high speed line across the north through Manchester and Leeds - estimated to have cost £40 billion - were backed by short lived Prime Minister Liz Truss, but it's since been reported that current PM Rishi Sunak is planning to pull back on these plans. With this latest news and the comment from Schapps, we want to know your thoughts on the Northern Powerhouse Rail project. The plans have been scaled back to upgrading the existing line, with Schapps telling the BBC: "The line itself can deliver a 33-minute journey from Manchester to Leeds, quadruple nearly the capacity of that line, and do so without having to wait an extra 20 years beyond the delivery of what the upgrade can do.
Some readers have reacted angrily too, with one saying: "It was just a smoke screen to pin hopes on, if it’s not London they're not bothered." Do you think more should be done to improve rail links in the north? Share your thoughts in our comments section.
