And yet, a growing number of white people believe the opposite. That tells us two things.
Firstly, we need to improve our education system, to teach people about the lives of others and how to think critically and rationally. Secondly, people feel so hard done by and down on their luck, the idea they’re actually getting a better deal than other groups feels impossible, even though it’s true.

Other forms of bigotry thrived – ‘promoting homosexuality in schools’ was illegal and just three years before,was murdered because of the colour of his skin and a deeply racist police force absolutely failed to bring his killers to justice. Since the dawn of humanity, people have been saying things were better in ‘the good old days’. It is, and always has been, complete and utter nonsense.
Even if it was true, we can never go back . Never let yourself believe your best years are behind you. They aren’t, thank goodness.
If they were, there really would be no hope for you. Rather than the proposed ban on social media for under-16s, why not ban harmful practices by Big Tech that affect all users? How about looking at non-neutral search, infinite scroll, auto-play videos and any so-called ‘personalisation’ not controlled by individuals? Searches no longer rely simply on the search terms used but rather on ‘guesses’ decided by algorithms programmed by Big Tech.
These are based on some combination of synonyms, advertisers, auto-correct and supposedly ‘personalised’ factors based on other activities recorded. If Big Tech object, tell them they will be treated as publishers and so subject to the same laws as media companies – where their algorithms are acting like editors, those platforms are no longer a neutral ‘public square’. I went to watch Elkie Brooks in Harrogate this week.
