Really serious crimes have dominated the courts in Nottingham during September. People who have killed and another who put many lives at risk have all been dealt with during the month. Here, reporter Martin Naylor selects just a few of the cases he covered.
Jailing Majid, Judge Steven Coupland said: "His death was a tragedy for those who loved him and I have heard moving tributes from his four siblings, his father and his aunt and the catastrophic loss they all feel. One-punch killer Kevin Wild Kevin Wild, 53, was jailed for six years and nine months for killing Jermaine Mazlum with one punch in an unprovoked street attack. The defendant, of St Anns, struck the victim with such force he fell backwards and hit his head on the ground, suffering what was ultimately a fatal injury.
“This was an unprovoked attack, it was a sucker punch, he did not stand a chance. He was a vulnerable individual.” Sending him to prison this week, Judge Nirmal Shant KC said: “The consequences of your actions don’t bear thinking about. This was a building with a basement car park and 15 stories with people living inside it all of whom had to be evacuated.
School fraudster Wendy Gill Nottingham primary school business manager Wendy Gill, who abused her position to steal more than £70,000, was sent to prison for two years and one month. The grandmother’s criminal behaviour meant that pupils, including those with special needs, “were deprived of essential resources they needed”. The headteacher at Bramcote C of E Primary had to contemplate making redundancies because of the budget deficit Gill's actions created.
The defendant’s car left the road and overturned into a ditch after he had crossed to the wrong side of the road to overtake slower-moving traffic. Mr Sissons, 22, was declared dead at the scene and analysis later discovered the defendant had been driving at 87mph in the 60mph limit moments before the collision.
