'Fantastic' for jobs, local economy and area's future, say supporters
The generating lives of two nuclear power stations in Lancashire, and others across the UK, will be extended to maintain electricity output as the move towards cleaner energy continues, a government minister announced during a visit to Heysham.
Lord Hunt said: "Heysham 1's operation is being extended from 2026 to 2027 and Heysham 2 from 2028 to 2030. The key point is that nuclear power is low carbon, so helps in our national moves towards having very clean power by 2030. Martin Cheetham, EDF Energy's station director of Heysham 2, said: "This announcement today is really special. There are 1,500 people working here and we contribute hugely to the local economy. We have a large local workforce and local suppliers, so securing the sites' longer operation is fantastic news.
Mr Cheetham said: "The nuclear industry in all its phases is fantastic for careers and skills. It is an industry with a future. We are actively investing in young people and future talent pipelines. We have outreach projects with schools and colleges, for apprentices, graduates and non-graduates. Morecambe Labour MP Lizzi Collinge said: "From my viewpoint, this is about having big national energy projects such as nuclear power along with local energy generation guided by communities working to reach net zero emission targets. Ultimately, we want to get off gas and fossil fuels and nuclear has to be part of that change.
"There are good jobs here in Heysham for all sorts of roles. And the skills are transferable. Engineers, technicians or whatever can work in nuclear, wind power, solar, battery storage or other technologies. Different industries across Britain face similar challenges to move to cleaner energy and the energy generation and efficiency solutions will be common to all sectors."
