Rebel Tories are said to have launched an operation - called Operation Rinka - to oust Boris Johnson after it was reported he plans to sack officials in order to save himself.
The newspaper reports that among the groups being lobbied to submit no confidence letters was the new intake of Tory MPs at the 2019 election, many of whom felt they owed their electoral success to Mr Johnson.
A senior government source said Johnson’s problem was different from his predecessor Theresa May’s – who was forced to resign over her failure to get a Brexit deal through parliament.While she faced a backlash from Brexiters, many groups are said to be angry at the current prime minister, from lockdown sceptics and disgruntled ex-ministers to MPs in former red wall seats who believe he is failing to deliver on the levelling-up agenda.
He added: ‘Not only me but other eyewitnesses who discussed this at the time would swear under oath this is what happened.’ Andrew Bridgen, William Wragg, Douglas Ross, Caroline Nokes and Sir Roger Gale are among the other Tory MPs who have publicly called on the PM to resign.
