Antrim welcome Clare to Corrigan Park for their opening Division Three clash of 2025 as both teams face their first competitive game under the new rules
With the opening flurry of games in a new era for Gaelic Football done and dusted last night, the rule changes might be a little bit clearer as Antrim host Clare in Corrigan Park in today’s Division Three clash.
Indeed, Antrim’s last three games are away to Laois and Kildare either side of a home game against Sligo, so they’ll be keen to pick up points early in the campaign. Gaelic football, as we know it, is about to change as the Football Review Committee’s new rules come into effect this weekend with the start of the Allianz Football League.
The seven key rule changes are outlined below, but the penalties for breaking the new rules may well provide the major talking points around the grounds this weekend.Just two midfielders, one from each team, will contest throw-ins at the start of each half. The other two midfielders will stand on opposite sidelines.Kickouts must now travel past the new 40-metre scoring arc otherwise it will be a free against the team taking the kickout from the place of the foul.
If a player carrying the ball crosses the halfway line and leaves less than three players back in their defence, a free is awarded to the opposition at the point they crossed the halfway line. Failure to retreat after a free or not handing over possession immediately when a free is awarded also results in the ball being moved forward by 50 metres.
