A record-high 443,000 fines were issued in the last school year for parents taking children out of school during term time for unauthorised holidays, marking a 53% increase since the pandemic. The Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has confirmed plans to increase fines further. Parents can face a range of penalties, including fines that double if unpaid, parenting orders, education supervision orders, and even court prosecution leading to hefty fines, community orders, parenting orders, or jail sentences.

A total of 443,000 fines were issued in the last school year as a result of parents taking their children out of school during term time for unauthorised holidays. This marked a record-high and 53% increase since the pandemic and the data comes after Education secretary Bridget Phillipson confirmed plans to increase fines.

Starting from the 2024/2025 school year, each parent will only be able to get fined twice within three years. The second fine will automatically be £160 from the start. A parenting order forces recipients to attend parenting classes and commit to other tasks the court may order to improve their child’s school attendance. An education supervision order, on the other hand, is issued if your council believes you need support to get your child to school but you aren’t cooperating.
