Ami Laurie has turned her life around thanks to three spells of rehab and solid support

Recovering addict Ami Laurie believes greater access to longer-term residential rehab is the best pathway to a better life. Ami, 38, spent more than two decades addicted to drugs and alcohol. She felt her pathway to effective treatment was blocked by the stigma and shame that accompanies addiction.

She said: “I feel saddened to hear that drug deaths are going up and I can say right away that there isn’t enough being done, not enough rehab being offered. Ami said it was helpful for her to initially move away from home to get treatment. She said: “There’s still a lot of stigma around addiction and it can be difficult to turn up for treatment near where you were brought up. I really think society needs to tackle that before we things really get better.”

Top news stories today Eddie says: “When I lost my job I went into a proper depression. The one person I turned to for support offered me a smoke of heroin. I was convinced it wouldn’t catch me, but six weeks later I was addicted.”
