Six of the creatures have been released by the charity Trees For Life into woods in Drimnin Estate in the remote Morvern peninsula in the Highlands.
More red squirrels have been brought back to Scotland’s west coast as part of conservation efforts to save the extinction-threatened species.
That’s because the iconic Scots squirrel is notoriously forgetful about where it buries its winter stores of nuts and seeds - unintentionally planting new trees. These latest arrivals will help bolster Morvern’s existing population of reds, which has been growing since the rewilding charity released 21 squirrels at Lochaline two years ago.
The new population of reds at Driminin has already been seen playing and feeding in the estate’s woodlands. Just 120,000 red squirrels remain in Scotland – now massively outnumbered by the grey squirrels brought over from North America in Victorian times.
