Reddit has temporarily banned one community and permanently removed another after Elon Musk, owner of X (formerly Twitter), claimed users made comments about his employees that broke the law. The r/WhitePeopleTwitter subreddit was banned for 72 hours following posts that encouraged violence against members of Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). Musk, a self-proclaimed free speech advocate, shared the posts on X and declared they were illegal. Reddit declined to comment but referred to a public statement about rule violations. This incident highlights ongoing tensions between free speech and online harassment.

Reddit has temporarily banned one of its communities - and removed another - after X owner Elon Musk claimed comments made by the site's users about his employees were breaking the law.

In 2024, he responded to a video of a person purportedly being arrested for offensive comments online by asking "is this Britain or the Soviet Union?". in protest at Musk's controversial arm gesture at a rally celebrating Donald Trump's return to office. "Inciting and glorifying violence or doxing are against Reddit's platform-wide rules," it states, adding the subreddit will reopen in 72 hours.

But the decision to remove the subreddit may have been about more than Reddit enforcing its policies.
