A collection of photographs taken by Paul Thorpe in May 1990 at a car boot sale in Failsworth, Oldham, has been rediscovered. The photos offer a glimpse into the popular event, showcasing bargain hunters and the unique characters that frequented these markets.
'They were taken in the days when car boot sale s were popular, especially if you were hard up like me!'
A fascinating set of photographs documenting the early morning bargain hunters at a Greater Manchester car boot sale have been rediscovered. He believes the event took place on the grounds of an old mill in the town, which is now a Morrisons. The mill Paul refers to is likely the Marlborough No.2 Mill which was demolished in 1998 and the supermarket built on site.
Having become interested in photography in the early 1970s, Paul said he wasn't confident at first about approaching strangers and taking photographs.
