Reds head coach Pereira views challenge as 'drug' to push through tension, anniversary season

Reds coach sees competition as a necessity and source of fuel after spending two seasons fighting relegation and securing safety, comparing it to a chemical dependency.

survival, but soon afterwards it will be straight back to work. He wouldn’t have it any other way, because for Pereira the challenge is what sustains and defines him.the Reds head coachGet all the Nottingham Forest latest via our Facebook page “Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night just to write something down, because I do not want to forget it.

I found the solution when I was sleeping!

“I ask myself why I do not stop a bit. Why? But after one week of holiday, two or three weeks, the third or fourth week I start to feel nervous.

“That is why I say it is like a drug, because we start to feel in our body that we need to compete again and go to the fight again. It is a bit strange to live in a stressful world, but we cannot leave this world.

"Every season is different. I recognise this season was tough for me and tough for the players. Tough for me because I worked on two projects - fighting every time, struggling with results, trying to get the points and using up a lot of energy and time. But in the end, this is the fuel that I need to live and to be myself and to compete.

"Something that defines me very well as a person is that I'm very competitive. Very competitive. I need the competition to prove myself every day. ” During his spell at Wolves, Pereira became known for his “first the points, then the pints” quip amid a successful fight against relegation in 2024/25.

After a poor start to this campaign, he left the West Midlands in November and his former club ultimately failed to beat the drop again this time around.at the helm in February and secured safety with two games to spare. So will he allow himself a glass of something cold now?

"I hope so,” Pereira laughed. “I start in my country. In my country we don't call them pints but beer is beer!

"I don't have a lot of time in my life. Straight after this , I am back to work, to try to plan training, to analyse the opponent and to look at my wall. On my wall I have a lot of tactical boards, so I will look at the boards to imagine what can happen in the game and try to define a strategy and decide the team to start.

“And set-pieces. Before every game we need to prepare to have conversations about the set-plays. This is a lot to do! I don’t have a lot of time to enjoy my life.

"In the summer I can relax a bit. When we finish , I can relax a bit and enjoy a beer and my family and friends and my city.

" It is all very different to when Pereira worked as a sports teacher earlier on in his life. But he has not forgotten those days.

“When I was a teacher, it was different,” he explained. “I knew I had one week to work, and then at the weekend I could go somewhere and enjoy myself. “Football is not like this. In football, even on holiday you cannot stop working because we are always preparing for the next challenge.

When you win a game, you start to think about the next game. This is our life.
