Reds starting pitcher Frankie Montas became the first visiting pitcher in Coors Field history to achieve a feat on Tuesday night.
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Frankie Montas throws during the first inning of an opening day baseball game against the Washington Nationals in Cincinnati, Thursday, March 28, 2024. CINCINNATI - Montas became the first visiting pitcher to pitch seven innings, allow no more than one hit and record nine or more strikeouts in the history of the stadium, which opened in 1995.
Montas took a no-hitter into the seventh inning where Elias Diaz broke it up with a double to center field to open the inning. Montas retired the next three batters to conclude his outing and win for the first time since April 3. He was pulled after the inning having allowed just the one hit and struck out nine.“If I said no, I’d lie,” Montas said, according to the Associated Press. “If I would have thrown a no-hitter, that would be dope. My arm is feeling really good.
Hideo Nomo of the Los Angeles Dodgers threw the only no-hitter at Coors Field on Sept. 17, 1996. Nomo recorded eight strikeouts in the game.“I knew since the first inning," Montas said. "I haven’t really been striking out people, and after I struck out those two guys in the first inning I was, ‘OK, my stuff is really playing tonight.’ I was just focusing on attacking the guys and letting my stuff play.
