Chief executive of Homes England Peter Denton says the Government must take the lead in building new homes
Angela Rayner has promised more affordable housing but Chancellor Rachel Reeves is reluctant to increase grant funding The Government will have to increase funding for affordable housing or it will be unable to deliver its promise to build 1.5 million homes in the next Parliament, according to the boss of Homes England.
But that will likely require a boost to grant funding – to support the capital costs of developing affordable housing – at the October Budget. Peter Denton, chief executive of the Government’s affordable housing delivery body Homes England – first set up under Michael Gove – toldHe said he has been given “very, very clear” instructions from Ms Rayner as to her preference.
But he added: “I think there is a tension between viability and – but be under no illusions this government is absolutely categoric in its commitment to social rent.” “It’s not the only way to achieve this – but I think government – both local and central – has to set a very clear message of what expectations are.”
