The Dutchman left a nation seething after he was instructed to the video monitor to review Scott McTominay's stunner.
Under-fire Serdar Gozubuyuk appeared to disallow Scotland's 'goal' against Spain for a foul and NOT offside on the basis of the hand signal used by the man in the middle.
The Dutchman left a nation seething after he was instructed to the video monitor to review Scott McTominay's stunner for Jack Hendry's role as he stood in front of La Roja No.1 Unai Simon. Gozubuyuk was instructed to the side of the pitch in Seville's Olympic Stadium and it appeared he chalked the goal off for a foul on Hendry.
That was the official reason UEFA shared with broadcast TV before there was a change 10 minutes later when the governing body moved to insist Hendry was offside and was deemed to be interfering with play before the Manchester United star almost burst the net with his stunning strike. And now Gozubuyuk's hand gesture is under the microscope as social media united over a key gesture after the goal was not given. The man in the middle points back to the halfway line which indicates a foul. If it was offside, the grade one UEFA whistler would have raised his hand in the air.
And Scotland boss Steve Clarke admitted after the game the no call for McTominay's strike wasn't the only decision he disagreed with after Che Adams went tumbling in the box late on under a Spanish challenge. He said: "For the life of me I don't know why VAR didn't look a the push at the end. I know it's only for 2-1 but 2-1 is a better score than 2-0. For me it's a penalty.
