The Labour leader said: “This is the one contest where voters had the chance to send a message to Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives directly, and that message is an overwhelming vote for change.” Elections expert Professor John Curtice said: “It’s still the case that Labour are not heading for the kind of really dramatic local election performances that they managed to achieve under Tony Blair before the 1997 general election.”But Curtice added that the by-election result, the third-biggest swing since the Second World War, was not an “isolated event” and did surpass what Blair achieved in the 1990s.
