A refuelling error is understood to have cost BMW driver Marco Wittmann a near-certain victory in the DTM race at Oschersleben, but the exact cause of the problem is yet to be determined.
Wittmann was leading Saturday’s opening race of 2024 when his Schubert Motorsport-entered BMW M4 GT3 suddenly began to slow down with four laps to go, before coming to a halt at the start/finish straight. The two-time DTM champion had tactically made his pitstop moments before the Full Course Yellow was deployed to assist the recovery of Ben Dorr’s stranded McLaren, which allowed him to jump from outside the top 10 into the lead of the race.
Asked to explain the problem, team chief Torsten Schubert told German broadcaster Ran: 'We have to see whether a pump has failed or whether it was a mistake by the team. I can't explain it at the moment. “The amount of petrol was predetermined, as was the case with the others, and we also had a safety car phase. So it could hardly have been too little. 'If we have made a mistake, then I can understand that, then that is our issue. But I don't think we made a mistake.
