Just 967 refugees were admitted in the first three quarters of 2022 🔴Exclusive from Rob_Merrick
is breaking a promise to welcome more “vulnerable refugees” through legal channels, forcing them to risk their lives crossing the Channel in small boats,The number of refugees granted resettlement in the UK through the official government partnership with the UN plunged by 77% last year compared with the same period in 2019, with just 967 admitted in the first three quarters of 2022.
Rishi Sunak prepares to unveil hardline new laws to detain and deport anyone who arrives “illegally”. The total number of refugees resettled fell steadily through 2022, to just 279 in the third quarter, having reached 510 in the same quarter of 2021, soon after the UKRS was introduced. Labour’s immigration spokesperson, Stephen Kinnock, said: “Conservative ministers disingenuously claim asylum seekers making dangerous journeys across the Channel should be applying for asylum through safe and legal routes, when the reality is they have closed many of the safe and legal routes down.”
Campaigners have pushed for the UK to resettle 10,000 refugees each year, around 15 refugees for each MP’s constituency, by stepping up referrals from the UNHCR dramatically. Mr Davies added: “The lack of safe routes such as refugee visa schemes, and the drop in the numbers of people coming through resettlement schemes, is forcing more people in desperate need to take the dangerous Channel crossing.”
