Regional Accents Fuel Criminal Stereotypes, Study Finds

A new study by the University of Cambridge reveals that people with regional accents, particularly those from Liverpool and Bradford, are more likely to be perceived as criminals. The study also found that the Cockney accent is viewed as the most working class, while Glaswegian accents are seen as more likely to defend others. Researchers warn that these stereotypes can have real-life legal consequences and call for measures to mitigate voice bias in the criminal justice system.

Men with regional accents from areas such as Liverpool and Bradford are perceived as more likely to commit crimes, a study has found.

The later — which is linked to the south of England and the upper classes — was ranked highest for wealth and confidence. Ms Paver told The Times: 'Police officers, lawyers and juries are all susceptible to judging voices based on stereotypes, whether they're aware of it or not.
