A growing number of regional towns are pinning their tourism hopes on mountain biking, as the sport booms in popularity.A $2.35 million revitalisation project of Forrest's mountain bike trails is now complete

"If you compare it to other sports, there are more people mountain biking than there are playing rugby league and rugby union." Forrest Mountain Bike Club secretary Michelle Davidson said the club had been pushing for the upgrades for a decade, to keep their town relevant amid the mountain biking boom.

"Mountain biking is seeing a lot more female participation, which is amazing. We see that when we hold events.Work began last year on a large network of trails in Omeo, in east Gippsland, and new trails opened linking Beechworth and Yackandandah earlier this year. "The area I think we need to focus on is making sure people in urban areas, in the cities, have options to ride as well," he said.
