With a record 24 races on the 2024 calendar, it promises to be F1's toughest gauntlet to date. While attempts have been made to regionalize the schedule more, a number of big pressures make the ‘perfect calendar’ hard to achieve, writes LukeSmithF1.
Efforts have been made to regionalize the schedule better — bunching together races in the same parts of the world — aiding logistics and the toll it places on the thousands of people traveling from event to event. But a number of big pressures make the ‘perfect calendar’ hard to achieve.Ramadan forces Saturday races
Japan’s move is also notable. The race had previously been staunch about wanting a fall date, but this also coincided with periods of bad weather. In 2019, Saturday’s events had to be called off due to the threat of a typhoon, while torrential rain meant only 28 laps of the grand prix could be completed. Moving to April should bring better weather, and also gives a chance of coinciding with Japan’s cherry blossom season.
There have been some more sensible moves. Qatar’s shift to pair with Abu Dhabi at the end of the season is a really good breakthrough for F1, avoiding its somewhat odd placement this year as a standalone between Singapore/Japan and the Americas. The European schedule remains largely unchanged, the only tweak being Spain’s move to late June instead of early June, now forming a triple-header with Austria and Great Britain.
